Weekly chat with my local friendly pawnbroker.

Last week, I bought the terrible news that my local friendly Estate Agent seemed to have shut up shop. This was terribly dissapointing, as I was hoping to bring news of frenetic scenes as eager buyers fought each other as they struggled to enter the already heaving office.
So this week I decided to visit my local friendly pawnbroker. On entering his shop I was greeted by the owner. I enquired as to how business was doing, and he said that he's never been busier. Gold watches, expensive jewellery and plenty of iPhones were on display. "Problem is, not many buyers. And many punters are coming in desperate for the cash, never to be seen again, so I end up with all this stuff." I heard someone enter the shop behind me. "Ah, here's one of the regulars". I turned round to see a familiar face. It was my local friendly ex - estate agent. "How much for this leather bound filofax and........." He recognised me and said "it's just that a friend of mine has hit hard times and needs a few quid urgently". I asked him why he had closed his office down. "The demand was too much, I found it impossible to cope with the amount of buyers. Not only that, there was this bloke who kept coming in, pestering me about sales figures. Every week he would come in and start asking all sorts of questions. I just gave him a load of flannel, and he eventually left. He was a real nuisance, and I never found out his name, all he would do is leave the office muttering something about ghouls or something like that."
I don't know where I'll be reporting from next week, it'll be a suprise.

He didn't mention it, but I didn't ask.

Oh, how I wish this were true....
I like my toys, and I like a bargain. Always looking out for deals on motorbikes, cars, high end audio gear, watches, etc..... Pretty much anything nice or fun if the price is right.
When this whole recession kicked off, I had the expectation there would be deals to be had on a few things. Figured people would be selling the non-essential toys cheap to keep costs down in an age of austerity, and I could pick up a few things at maybe 25% or 30% off normal 2nd hand values.
Just hasn't been the case for the things I've been looking at.
Got a good deal on a motorbike in late 2008, but next to nothing of any real quality has come up at bargain prices since.
Bit like the housing market, come to think of it...“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

Look forward to it. Just a bit of advice...
If I were you, I wouldn't make it the travel agent. He will be far too busy booking trips to Egypt and Tunisia.
I'm going to see the local Funeral Director. Far more life there than at the Estate Agent's.0
