Paternity leave/new job query

hi

im due to have an interview tomorow for a new job (after getting jsa for 3 months) however my girlfriend is due to give birth on 25th feb.....are they not likely to take me on because of this?

also am i right in thinking if they do hire me that they wouldnt give me paternity leave?

or should i just not tell them in the interview and wait until i know if ive got the job?

thanks

You won't qualify for paternity, you have to be with an employer for 26 weeks.

  • so if im at work when she goes into labour they wont let me leave?

and like they prob wont give me any time off even tho my partner will be home alone with 2 kids?
  • Why mention it?

She's due in 3 months, leave it for a few weeks if you get the job and then book some holiday to cover the time

You specifically asked about Paternity leave, and you won't be entitled to it as you haven't worked there long enough.

They'll let you leave, sure. But you'll be expected back at work the next day, unless you can secure some annual leave at short notice. Or your new boss is an absolute diamond and lets you have a few days off.

    Personally, I wouldn't mention it.

OP said 25th Feb; he doesn't have a few weeks :)

If the employer won't give you (even unpaid) time off to be there when your child is born, there's a good chance they're not really the kind of employer you want to work for.

You might be entitled to (unpaid) time off under the 'Time off for dependants' rights - see here (but I don't know if you'd qualify as such a new employee).
  • googlewhacker - shes due in 3 weeks not months

Gordon hose - i didnt specifically ask bout paternity leave, there were 3 questions in my first post,

but cos shes group b strep she has to stay in hosp for 2 days after, so ill have to look after my son so wont be able to go bk the next day

None of that is your potential employers fault though. You'll have to take some annual leave. Or hope you potential new boss is accommodating.
  • Annisele - thank you for your reply, As my post above says she has to stay in hosp for 2 days after giving birth so ill need to look after my child, i guess ill just have to ask them at the interview and if they dont take me then oh well haha
  • did i say it was their fault then? im only looking for answers to my questions jeeeeezzzzzz thanks gordon hose for your help i guess if u can call it that
