LCS and data protection

A few posts here about collections agency, LCS.
Long story about an alleged debt to Southern Electric - complicated but clearly been passed to LCS. After a tracing letter in mid January, today received one about the debt per se and a £200.00 admin fee which, they say, is from the utility co, not them.
Anyway, I hadn't given my personal details to LCS when I phoned them after receiving the tracing letter. South Elec hadn't given them my landline and husband's mobile because they don't have those particular numbers. However, early on Saturday morning, LCS rang my home, young son answered. I was out. So they were able to verify that that was my number. Today I asked them how on earth they got my numbers and they said that a 'third party' who doesn't want them to divulge his/her identity rang them with our numbers - landline and mobile. We are ex-directory. Said I could send them £10.00 for subject access request but of course might well not tell me who the informant is. Rang Information Commission helpline - weren't clear!
Do I have rights to know? Have some ideas of who this may be but and it's a big but, no-one outside my home (in fact only me really) knows about LCS and has seen the letters. They said experion and the equifax are always involved in the original trace but that this intervention by a third party was nothing to do with that.
Troubled by this - and agree with all posts that say tell LCS as little as possible. Deal directly with the utility company. Thoughts would be welcome - thanks.
