Sterling Silver vs Platinum wedding Band?

Hi,
I need to purchase my wedding bands for me and my partner. I already have a platinum engagement ring but I don't want something so expensive for my wedding band.
Does anyone know the benefits/disadvantages of a sterling silver wedding band?
I was thinking of something like this one:

Hi roses,
I think the main disadvantage of getting a sterling silver ring will be the difference in "hardness" of the metals.
I believe both rings are supposed to be made of the same metal to prevent one wearing the other away.

I second bluekp's advice.
We were told the same when we went looking for our wedding rings. You should buy the same metal for both rings or one will wear away the other.
Silver also tarnishes easier than platinum - i have several silver rings that were fairly expensive and they all have a kind of blacky/grey speckled layer on them.:jProud mummy to a beautiful baby girl born 22/12/11 :j0 -
What bluekp said about hardness is true.
You could go for palladium, which is the same hardness as platinum, but lighter.
Don't forget that silver will tarnish & dull much quicker than other precious metals.0 -
Hey Roses,
I've got a platinum engagement ring too and just last week bought my wedding band on sale for £295, which was brilliant. Have you looked into Palladium, it's in the same 'family' as Platinum but alot cheaper. I was going to go for something like this but as I said, I found a ring to suit on sale.
ETA: Raindrops beat me to it by mentioning Palladium!0 -
When I was choosing my engagement ring, my jeweller told me that silver is generally unsuitable for rings you'll wear every day because it's so soft, so wearing it with a platinum ring will shorten its lifespan even more. I know someone who had a silver wedding ring which has had to be patched twice and then replaced all together, so this isn't jewellers spin in trying to get you to spend more!0

My DH is a chemist by profession so knows about the different hardness of metals - he said "bite the bullet and invest in platinum. After all, you'll be married for the rest of your lives and you want a ring that will be as enduring as your marriage"0

Yeah im with the majority think a platinum ring is best if thats what your engagement ring is but maybe you could trim the budget by getting your partner palladium. if your buying two maybe be cheeky and ask for a discount.0

My engagement ring is palladium and it looks the same as platinum to me, feels really hard etc.
It cost less to have it in palladium than it would have done to have white gold, and was about half the price of platinum! Bargain!First date 10.2.2002
