I need help and don't know where to turn

Hi

This is the first time that I have spoken to anyone about my debt problems because I am ashamed and afraid.

7-8 years ago I got into debt with several creditors and, whilst I paid most of it back, one of my creditors (a high street bank) didn't get in touch and I didn't change my address with them when I moved house several times. I have had this hanging over me for years and am really worried because I was stupid and stuck my head in the sand and didn't deal with it at the time.

Yesterday a message was left on my landline that sounded like it was from a debt recovery company although, because it was an automated message that kicked in as soon as the answer phone kicked in, the first part of the message wasn't recorded so I don't know who it was, who they are looking for or how to get hold of them.

I really want to sort it out and am terrified that bailiffs will turn up at the house. I have a tiny income (I am a mature student) and am completely reliant on my husband's income and, being a newly qualified teacher, he doesn't earn much yet. I don't know what to do or what my options are and can't sleep and constantly feel physically sick with worry.

The rational side of me knows that, if it is a debt recovery company, that they will call back and I can take it from there but I don't know how to deal with them i.e. get them to accept a manageable payment plan and stop them from seizing our goods.

I can't take any more worry - I hope that someone can help me because I don't know who to turn to.

Hi Don't worry. If the debt is over 6 years old it may be statute barred. If they ring refuse to discuss ANYTHING over the phone no matter what they say. Don't give them your name either.
If anyone gets in touch just post on here what the debt was, when you last made a payment and who is chasing you. Then we can advise.
Remember debt collectors buy debts for pennies then chase people for the money hoping enough don't know about their rights.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)
  • Thank you, I really appreciate it and will post again if I hear anything. I have just felt so alone but your response and reading other people's posts has helped because there are other people in similar situations. We, my husband and I, will carry on working to be debt free and cross any bridges as we come to them. I wish they taught you how to manage money in school and that I knew then what I now know!
  • Hi,
It might also be worth your while checking your credit report at all three agencies. The debt may well show there and with a date that you defaulted - and check if this is correct information.

  • Good advice thank you. Stupid question though - what do you mean by all three agencies?

There are three companies that hold copies of your credit history: Experien, Equifax and Callcredit.

Different companies use different ones to check your credit history.
