am going to try and get one of these later, OH and DS son like sponge puddings do you get a twin pack of small puddings or is it a large pudding?
  • One large sponge pudding. I got 2 on thursday & picked 2 up for my sister yesterday, all chickens were around the £6 mark & I can confirm the cherry pie is delish!
  • Popped in today and got a £6 Oakham chicken and the apple pie, good deal! their apple pies are really nice, not something we often have but are the best ...I may have to pop back and get another deal for the freezer

the Chinese deal at £8 isnt bad, 2 mains, starter and rice, at 3.99 for the mains you are really getting the rice and starter free as such, tho they were out of my favourite Sticky Chill Chicken ..if you havent had it, its to die for! :)
  • sorry to repeat my post from another thread, but anyone buying oakham chickens should be aware of what they are buying, and why M&S are slashing the prices on these so called ethical chickens!

Have you actually looked into what Oakham chickens are?

"At M&S, all our fresh chicken is Oakham chicken. This slower growing breed, exclusive to us, comes from dedicated UK farms that we know and trust. So we can guarantee that every bird is reared in a way that meets our own standards for animal welfare."

Firstly, Oakham is not a breed of Chicken, but a brand name. The chickens themselves come from nowhere near Oakham, and some even come from outside the UK (check the small print on the label).

"We insist that the birds are slower grown and have a maximum stocking density of 30kg per square metre. The birds are housed on straw or wood shavings and have constant access to food and water."

So......if the average chicken weighs in at 1.3 kg, that's 23 chickens per square metre. Horiffic!

If you are buying Oakham chicken, you mayaswell be buying battery chicken, as the conditions they are kept in are pretty similar!

Shame on you M&S for tricking people into thinking they are doing good by buying your mysterious breed of indoor reared chicken!

If they had not told you all this, you would not think it mysterious and tricky ! That may be 30 kg of live feathered walking talking complete chicken per square metre rather than 1.3 kg of plucked gutted packaged and dead. I'd say a live one weighs 3-4 kg. Say thats 10 per square metre in a huge shed - probably like a music festival, there will be open spaces and crowded areas. :rotfl:
I do agree its naughty though if they say its British and it isn't.

The Oakham chicken snuggling right now in my freezer says it was reared in Mersham Farm in Norfolk. Now I'm perfectly prepared to believe that there's a Norfolk in Bratislava or Lithuania, but Mersham Farm is stretching it a bit. All the Oakham chickens state their farm and district of origin on their labels.
  • mine has the name of the farm on it, idly googled it, it does exist.

Having used M&S my whole life, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt, as trading standards and massive fines/bad publicity would follow that kind of fib I'm sure! :) and based on the fact their food has always been high quality they wouldn't risk ruining their good reputation surely! but thank you for bringing the info to our attention.
