only recently received a letter from the benefits office saying i owe them in excess of £436.45 from the year 2003.
i have not been on benefits since 2004 and i have been working for the local council from then up to present day.
i hear rumours from other people saying that lons get written off after so many years and wondered if this is the case with me.
would appreciate any feedback before i start arranging payments with them

Old debts are not written off but some old become statute barred after a set amount of time meaning you still owe the money but cannot be taken to court for it.
For social loan debts - have a read of this - http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/england_wales/factsheet.php?page=25_liability_for_debts_and_the_limitation_act#chapter12
They can chase you for payment of this loan but cannot take court action if its over 6years old. But if you claim any benefits (or do so in the future) they can start deducting this overpayment from these benefits as the money is still legally owed.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
