Astigmatism Contact Lenses

Options
I just wondered if anyone had experience with these?

I'm trialling new contacts today, as my old ones gave me headaches and blurred vision.

I've got astigmatism correction in the left lense, and a slightly higher prescription in the right. I've had them in since around 10:20.

They aren't blurry, and I can see okay at a distance, but close up things are unfocused. They take forever to focus, and if I look away, they have to focus again and it takes forever again.

The contact is huge in my eye...you can't see the contact in my right eye but my left eye has a huge border.

I just phoned up the centre that fitted them, but she told me to keep it in as it can take a few minutes to get used too, and to mention any continuing problems at my follow-up appointment. She also said astigmatism contacts come in one diameter, and that wouldn't be the problem.

I just wondered what other peoples experiences with these were, and if anyone had any advice?

(I don't have bad astigmatism, I've never had contacts to correct this before and haven't always had issues with contact lenses.)

Thanks :)

You may not need a Toric lens to correct it if its only very tiny..

Mine are extremly rugby ball shaped..so I wear a monthly toric lens - they are made custom prescription and measurement. I cant get Toric dailies as they dont come "astigmatic" enough for my eyes

I had the problem of lovely vision far away but not super crisp close up when I first wore lenses but now I find them much better.

    - May be worth a second opinion/fitting if these arent right. I have had very bad experiences with some opticians. If you had "normal" lenses before and perfect vision....sure an expert will be along soon to help you mind!! didnt want to read and run :)

  • I've got monthly Torics too, I tried a LOT of lenses and these were the only ones that would work for me. I had problems with dryness, blurry vision and itchyness (just wanted to scratch them right out).

I can't for the life of me remember their name, i'm sorry :(

Will your optician let you have trials free of charge? Mine does and it really helped me find the right ones.

    Good luck :)

I have monthly torics and mine are mono vision, One eye is for distance the other eye is for close up.

    Works really well

Only problem is there is so little adjustment between the two I sometimes mix them up and end up giving myself headache cos Im straining to see clearly. Still when I think Ive done that I just pop in and get them to check for me
  • I wear one toric, one normal lens, for short sight. Never noticed a problem with focus. You can see the edge of the toric lens about a mm away from the iris (you have to be quite close and know what you are looking for!)

Thanks for your responses everyone :)

I don't know if they've got slightly better throughout the day or if I've just got used to them...the diameter does bother me though. They are really, really big...I'd say they are a cm bigger then my iris. Distance vision is good, close up vision is a bit unfocused.

I'll give them another try tomorrow, and Friday I've got a check up...just not sure if I should try a different optician now!

    What brand are you wearing?

Johnson and Johnson lenses tend to have quite large diameters (over 14.0) where cooper do a toric in 13.8 if I remember right? There is definitely more than 1 diameter for toric so I would discuss this with your optician and if they can't get you an alternate you may want to try elsewhere for lenses if you want to stick to toric.

Oh actually, if this is your first time with torics your lens may need the angle of astigmatism adjusted.

My diameter is 14.5 - theres a good couple of mm's clearance of my iris.

I'm wearing One Day Acuvue Moist (which might make the optician I'm using a bit obvious!) It was Air Optix Aqua I used to wear, although I think I eventually swapped to a version which allowed more oxygen through...I'm pretty sure they were the same brand.

The diameter on my right eye is 14.2, which is perfect, the left eye is 14.5. Which sounds like a small difference, but makes them really obvious, and because the sides go under my eyelids they are harder to get in and out.

I'm going back tomorrow, so I guess I need to decide what I want!

PS Am I supposed to be able to see the Astigmatism lense? When I look left, I can see it, if that makes sense. Gahh I've never struggled so much with contacts!

You folks do realise that we are talking in 10th of milimeters? 0.3 mm isn't going to make a big difference to perceived size - design and material characteristics probably have a bigger effect.
