Advice on My situation...(long read)

After looking over this forum for a few days i decided to to join to get some advice on my little situation....I'm glad forums like this exist, i've read alot of useful things so far

anyway

this is my situation

Recently i been trying to obtain a credit card (to build credit) but have had
no luck, not even with vanquis. I am 21, live my with parents and have recently started to work again after a 2 year gap. I have had a halifax cash account since about 2000 which i used to pay in my work salary though i have made a few late direct debits/standing orders payments before (not sure if ths affects credit rating). I have another basic bank account which has been kept well with steady income coming in and i have been considering using this as my main one now, would it make a difference?

Though i do think the main reason i have been rejected for credit is most likely because i have outstanding balances. I've obtained a credit report a few years ago which showed 1 default from tmobile (£239) from when i was about 16. Though since the last report i got abit more into debt; 3Gmobile (£700) and another phone company called toucan (£75) which i am in two minds about paying. I also owe the court £500 for a car fine of some sort but this will not affect my credit score will it?

I think i may have maybe one more outstanding but not too sure though i am in the process of obtaining another credit report from all 3 agencies but they are all having difficulty verifying my address. Could this possibly because i am not on the electrol roll? and maybe this is part the reason i cant get a credit card either?

Since i'm not sure if the 3G & Toucan one shave been defaulted, i've only been in contact with tmobile about paying off the outstanding amount. I know it take 6years for they default to drop off after payment but tmobile said they would remove the default. Does this mean they will mark it as satified or remove it completely?

how do i build credit if i cant get it?

One last thing. The toucan situationand why i dont want to pay. I had a BT landline but on BT pay as u go plan where you had to put credit on the phone to make calls. So i signed up with toucan for a landline phone (line & calls). I received a letter from BT saying 'sorry you leaving' and then started to receive calls with toucan though they had not taken over the actual line yet just the calls. I phoned them asking when this would happen and they didnt know! But if they dont even know, whos knows then. Anyway i cancelled them and went back to BT(received a letter from BT saying welcome back and one from toucan saying sorry your leaving). I then signed up with talktalk (letter from bt sayin sorry your leaving) within about 2weeks obtained calls but in the mean time i was receiving bills from toucan after they already confirmed cancelling with them about 2months back. Cut a long story short my calls were cut and it was done by toucan, i phoned them they said they still owed the line and the calls and because i had not paid my bill they suspending my account. But i cancelled toucan 2months back by now and they didnt own the line in the first place hence why i left. They said BT didnt take back the line from the (even thought they didnt own it in the first place anyway) so they kept onto it. But ok say this is true, why did they have control over my calls? anywya to cut the story short again, i owe them money for their mistake, they are more than likely put a default on against my name but i'm not sure if to fight it or just pay it.

sorry if this is confusing.....advice would be much appreciated

Thank you...MASTA SIMIT ;)

I think the answer to all the above is a definite YES it will (AND HAS) affected your credit score and will do so for the next 6 years minimum.
If you want to rebuild your credit score try settling some of these debts.
I'm not in he least suprised that you are finding it difficult to get credit now and you must have lied about your age on the Tmobile contract!

You remind me of my stepdaughter all she ever spent her money on (and money she did not have) was on bloody phones!!
Get a life, ditch the phones and start doing something meaninful with your life- you are only young once!
  • My question is.. as you can't get any form of credit until you're 18, how did you manage to get a default with Tmobile when you were 16??

first thing to do is go on the electoral roll...

seconly pay all the outstanding bills and settle the debts

thirdly, if you have paperwork that shows you dont owe toucan any money then take them to the small clains court and get the money back

why do you want credit? you are better off running your bank account in a sensible way and building up some savings and then maybe think about a credit card in a year or so.
  • Hi mastasimit

    I agree with Clapton:

why do you want credit? you are better off running your bank account in a sensible way and building up some savings and then maybe think about a credit card in a year or so.

Get yourself organised for now, clear your debts, and learn how to spend wisely.

Your 'defaults' are going to stay on your credit file for 6 years anyway - so see if you can live without credit, and get on the electoral register.

  • I am normally good with money, i just got myself into a bit of a situation lol But i get paid at the end of the money and intend to pay off all the debts. Thanks for the advice by the way
Oh one more thing, once i pay off tmobile i am going to continue with them but pay the line rental off for the year because i hate monthly bills. Can you rebuild credit through being on a monthly contract.

You seem to be remarkably casual about the one thing that could land you in very serious trouble indeed: I also owe the court £500 for a car fine of some sort

For heaven's sake get this one sorted!

You still haven't answered the queston about how you ran up a bill with T-Mobile when you were 16.

Also you say you are normally good with money.....i think the evidence proves otherwise. You can't even manage phone bills so i can see why credit card providers won't issue you with a card. Sorry to be harsh!

First things first....you need to get the debts sorted. Whats the car fine?
