Glasses/Eye Test etc ?!

Hey guys,
Sorry if this is a but rambly. Basically I'm a bit strapped for cash, but I really need an eye test and some glasses as I've noticed my sight's deteriorated somewhat in the past year. Specsavers and Vision Express are banging on my door begging for me to go back, except I want to get the best value for money :money:
I'm a bit confused about exactly what to do. Specsavers have a 30% off promotion for students, however an eye test is £22. On the Strand, there's an opticians called Optical Express and when I went in the lady said that an eye test was £15, but would be free if I bought some glasses afterwards. Glasses are a little pricey though. On their website however there's a voucher for a free eye test http://www.opticalexpress.com/uk/optical_express/special_offers/581 which could come in useful.
On another thread on here somewhere I read that once I've had an eye test I could take my prescription and go elsewhere to buy my glasses, and that there were some websites offering really cheap specs.
Basically I don't know what to do. I'm thinking take the free eye test, get my prescription and buy online. Would that be feasible/possible??
Thanks for your time. Sorry if this is all a little convoluted.

Yes you can get the prescription filled elsewhere.

If you're a student, does your uni have an optometry department? At my last uni final year students would conduct eye tests at very cheap prices.0

At the moment, the only voucher for a free eye test that I can think of is for Dollond and Aitchison, in the vouchers booklet with the Christmas Prima magazine. And 20% off glasses (but no obligation to buy from them). Have a search on the Discount vouchers forum, as there was also a voucher in the Christmas Asda magazine for a free eyetest at an Asda opticians(which may have expired by now), and if I remember rightly, on the I wanna.... forum someone was asking about Tesco opticians!
oops, the Tsco one hfinishes on the 12th, but Asda goes on til 30th November - see Martin's post here

If you join Boots health club they send you a voucher for a free eye test in Boots, about three weeks later.
I found specsavers the cheapest for varifocals on the high street, they start at £79. They were even cheaper than glassesdirect online.
If you only need normal distance lenses, buying online is cheapest.0 -
Hi bllipp - Dolland & Aitchison is offering a free eye test at the moment - print this voucher or request an email - it should be valid until the end of 2006. Here's the thread I found it on, hope this helps.0
