Be green, cheap kitchen compost bins

Hi,

I've been after a compost bin for the kitchen for some time (for tea bags, vegetable peels etc). This one was selling for £10-£12 on some sites for the bin alone, but it's only £4.99 at Lakeland Limited. The charcoal filters last for 4 months, and 8 replacements are also available at Lakeland for £2.99.

Postage is £3.95 or free for orders of £45 or more. I'm not aware of any promotional codes, and they're not listed on quidco or mutualpoints, but there's a wide variety of products to choose from to make up the free post. The links are:

Comments

  • I have got one of these bins but it ended up being stored in the garage. The main problem I found with it is the lid doesn't have an handle which makes it difficult to open. I either ended up dislodging the charcoal filter and having to fish it out of the bin or touching the inside of the lid - not nice.

I complained to Lakeland and they refunded the price of the bin and promised to pass my comments on to their design team.

I ended up buying a Brabantia recycling bin from John Lewis for £71:eek: (used a £20 discout code). I don't regret it for a minute. It is much easier to have the kitchen bin and compost bin combined. I can now empty the plates etc one handed.

IMO A small lidded plastic bin without the charcoal filter would do the job just as well.

i use a cinema popcorn bucket with lid and wash it regularly.!
Every day above ground is a good one ;)
  • The lid over hangs on one of the long sides, so it's easy to just raise the lid by placing my fingers underneath and lifting. I wonder if this is a variation of the design, after comments to Lakeland?

I bought one of these from a shop called 'The Range' in Scunthorpe. I'm sure I only paid about £12 for it though. Obviously not as cheap as the Lakeland ones.

I have used a Tesco Value bathroom pedal bin (approx £2.50), kept under the sink for almost a year now.

It not as big as a kitchen bin, has a lift out bucket with a handle and the lid fits relatively snugly. I put a folded sheet of paper in the bottom to soak up any excess liquid and also wrap up any wet kitchen waste in a further sheet of paper.

This has worked really well, even in the summer there was no smell if emptied regularly.
