Typing / working from home help needed?

Hi
I'm got quite a bit on my credit card (over £1500) that I want to try and get rid off. I had the idea that I would like to earn some money working from home but am scared to buy into these "work from home, earn loads" ads you see in your local newspaper.
As I work as a secretary full time during the day I have spare time in the evenings and weekends and thought it might be a good idea to use my typing skills to make some money. This is where I need some help.
I did have some general ideas about typing up / amended business reports, typing CVs / Essays etc...basically anything that needs typing up or amending. The problem being is I don't know if there is a company I can join that will pay me to do this or whether I would need to set something up myself. Also, I'm not quite sure of the logistics of it? I was thinking people could post me something and then I'd type and then email it back. Then I didn't know what to charge.
So basically I've got an idea but need help putting into practice. Can anyone give me any guidelines?
Thanks in advance

Sorry, I don't know much about this, but could you not put cards into newsagents windows, offering your typing skills?
No idea about pricing though.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -
Hi
Try doing a search for 'virtual assistant' or 'virtual secretary' in your area - there might already be something set up you could join.
Good luck

I would like to do this type of work too, had a similar idea but didnt know what to do about it. ( I have children but no support so hard to find suitable work)

This sounds like a pretty good idea - pity my typing speed is, well, not really up to speed :-p
A quick Google search (for 'typing services' brought up the following results:
http://www.libratypingservices.co.uk/
This one charges by the hour (£9)
http://www.writersservices.com/services/s_typing.htm
This one charges per thousand words (between £3.50 to £10)

This one asks that customers call up for quotes. They have a recruitment page, but they're not looking for anyone at the moment. However, they do have a testimonial from Martin - yes, OUR Martin! - on their front page!
It appears that for most of them, people can either send audio tracks or handwritten notes for transcription, so I guess your initial idea is along the right lines.0 -
Put the word around at work and among friends, relatives and neighbours. I bet there will be people who want things typed professionally, or know people who do.0

Indian typists will work for about a tenth of the pay of British typists.0 -
There was an advertisement in the local paper this week with several grammatical, punctuation and spelling mistakes.
It was placed by Unison asking for support for medical secretaries whose work was going to be outsourced to private companies.0 -

It's cheaper, of course.
I've looked into this work in the past, i find that most companies want a registration fee. Maybe word of mouth, starting up yourself would be your best bet.0 -
picklednut -- don't know where you are located, but if there is a university (or universities) near you, why not advertise (card on notice board) in the Student Union? Many students will require theses to be typed up. If you have proofreading skills as well as typing ability, you could command a much higher rate!0
