When my Dad was on the sick, he got just under £80 a week (so £79 sounds right). He got £51 of his £57 rent paid and I think he had to pay a couple of pound a week towards his Council Tax bill.

This was in 2009, so it may well have changed.

Would you be entitled to SSP though with you not working anymore? I thought you could only claim it if you were working?

Have you actually finished working now?

If so, I wonder if your GP realised this when they gave you the sick note?

You will be able to claim jobseekers if you are no longer working, provided your employer had to let you go (ie, you didn't walk out and you weren't sacked). Or maybe there is something else you can claim before you have a sicknote but aren't working (which would suggest that you can't look for another job at the moment because you are sick)?

I'd ring the job centre back (or call in if there is one local to you) and tell them the date you came out of work, then they will be able to tell you what you are entitled to and what you can claim for.

Hopefully someone else will be along soon who knows more than I do! :)

You might get a better response of the Benefits board. Infomation about ESA can be found here

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/DisabledPeople/FinancialSupport/esa/DG_171894

SSP is currently £79.15 but i'm not sure what the rate for ESA is?

Your Eligibility for Housing and Council Tax Benefits depends on lots of factors, The area you live in, Your age, Do you have a Partner, Do you have Children, Do you have savings....

For guidance look on your Local Councils website and find out what your LHA rate would be in your circumstances.
  • Hiya

Hopefully I can offer some advice, based on my experience this year. I was working for a Company and got sick...........I had to go into Hospital for major surgery. During this time, I was obviously unable to work and my Employer was paying me SSP at the rate of £79.15 a week. SSP is only paid by your employer.

Whilst recouperating, I was made redundant (yeah I know, nice!!) As I was still unable to work, I had to apply for ESA (Employment Support Allowance) as I was (and still am) unable to work. Form SSP1 is used to support a claim for Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).

If you follow this link, there is some more information and you can download the form here. I actually rang them and completed the form over the telephone with them.

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/Illorinjured/DG_10018786

ESA is paid at two rates - the assessment phase which lasts for 13 weeks and then the main phase after this. The above link will give you all this info. So initially you would be in the assessment phase - if you are single and under 25, you would receive £51.85 a week. If you are single and over 25, you will receive £65.45.

In addition to ESA, I am in receipt of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit - for these, you need to contact your Local Authority and they will send you out the necessary forms.

I hope this has helped.............be prepared as there is a LOT of form filling, waiting around and generally getting more stressed. If you have any more questions, just let me know and I'll try to help.
