Gas Bill Pickle

My relative has approached me with a problem that goes a little like this:
Since they moved into their current home some 18 years ago, they have never had a gas bill. They live in a cottage rent free as part of a salary package. Gas payments are not included however.
I think they thought they could get away with it, but they are now older and could be leaving in a few years time. They have managed to save a couple of thousand pounds but would like some advice as to how to go about informing the Gas company and what excuse to give them.
My relative says he read somwhere that a debt can only be claimed up to 7 years. Where do they stand legally? Can the gas company procecute? Any advice appreciated.

This happened to us when we first moved into our house. We were with Npower who never sent us a single bill in 2 years, and we never noticed the non payment as all our bills are on direct debit.
When I realised I called them and they agreed to start a direct debit and just increased it by a small amount every month to cover the debt. It was no problem and the debt has now been paid off. Its worth calling them to own up as the problem seems to be on both sides?“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
Nothing surprises me with gas companies, the company I work for has nevere had a bill in ages, in fact the company claims our meter is going backwards!! But do they bother to come out..... I feel its only credit agreements that are not recoverable after several years, as gas is not covered by a credit agreement I feel its best to contact them as they will admit themselves they have been in wrong by not spotting and will come to an agreement - dont do it by phone - do it by writing, keeping all copies of letters and replies in a file. Explain you thought it was all included as you never had a bill. My tip is to initially call the customer service phone number and get the name of the customer services manager. Send the letter to him/her direct by recorded delivery (extra 60p) and will ensure he/she reads it and im sure they will be understanding. Good luck0
