Hi,
could any one tell me what to look for in a digital slr, and a good user/guide book for a novice.
Thanks

you could sign up with https://www.flickr.com and join one of the groups such as http://www.flickr.com/groups/racedog/ (this is just one though there are many specially groups that can be searched for) and post a message as lots of other photographers use the site and i find its quite helpful for opinions on cameras etc.0

I think one of the major publications has a special on this in Decembers issue if you didn't mind splashing out on a magazine? Practical Photography or Digital Photography by emap I think - I am on their mailing list and sure thats what the email said this month .......0

I've used this site a few times and found it very helpful.

I've just bought an Olympus E500 and it's perfect for what I needed.0 -
I absolutely love my Fuji digital SLR. Have a friend who took her camera, quite an expensive, on holiday with me and we ended up with a lot of the same photos taken from our respective cameras. I really noticed that my Fuji was superior in image quality. I picked the SLR as it was easier to hold and had a 10 x optical zoom.0

Buy a copy of the new magazine: Digital SLR Photography.
First edition out now. Lots of beginners guides + buyers guide etc.
£3.70 IIRC.

Hello, I'm new, but I know a fair bit about cameras, if you want to PM me any questions I'd be happy to answer them and if I can't I can usually point you in the right direction.

Is yours the S5600 or S9500 - if so, maybe not an "SLR" that the OP is thinking of (lens insn't changeable, and it doesn't work on "reflex viewing" - no mirror or prism).pinkemsy wrote:I absolutely love my Fuji digital SLR. Not having a go, as I was going to ask whether a DSLR is the way to go - if you don't want to get into buying extra lenses at £200+ a pop), why buy a changeable-lens camera?
Argos may still have the S5600 at £112 (see the "grabbit" board, or check the Argos site). I have this one (£150 around 6 months ago from Currys), and would certainly recommend it.0 -
http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/enjoydslr/index.html is Canon biased but a good starting point.
http://www.photonhead.com/simcam/ lets you see the effect different settings produce.0 -
I have just upgraded to DSLR from a 35mm film SLR. The best advice I received was to go into jessops or somewhere like that, and ask them to show you a Canon 300/350/400d, a Nikon and possibly the sony one (cant remeber what its called). hold them, see what they feel like, if you like the interface, and then decide.
You dont have to buy one then either, say you will think about it, do so, then go back and repeat the process a bit later, to see if your memory of the camera is correct. Then make a decision.
Also, jessops online do some good deals ( i got the 400d, plus a telephoto lens reduced by £100 because i bought at the same time).
Use quidco or similar as well.
If you know anyone with an SLR or dSLR it might be worth asking them for a go, to see if you like the extra control you have, or if you would just prefer a high end point and shoot.
BTW, you will not get a 10X optical zoom lens on a dSLR for anything less than a lot of money. That is about a 600mm lens IIRC, and they are expensive!!!
