Can I stop these payments

Hi not sure where to post this so if it's not here sorry.
I have been paying £62 per month to a compamy who bought a debt I had with a catalogue, but as I'm getting into financial difficulty and have spoken to CAB they have told me to stop all non essential payments. I contacted the bank to stop this pament only to be told that because I had made the first payment using my debit card they couldn't stop the payments from being taken from the card and I should contact the company and request they stop taking them, which of course they won't do.
Does this mean that the debt company has more control over my debit card than me and what is to stop any company taking repeat amounts from my account when I have made a one off payment with my card? Hope this all makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to read it.

They cant take unauthorized payments from your debit card unless youve signed or agreed to something. However, to be on the safe side, open or use another account, cancel the card on this account, write to the creditors and tell them that you are offering a payment of a set amount each month. First of all take advice and consider a debt management programme by one of the non charging organisations.0

Also you can cancel the card, or just tell your bank that you have lost it.

thanks for that I will tell the bank I've lost my card. I didn't sign anything to at all and just made a normal payment over the phone to bring my account up to date. I think this is really frightening as stated above, any body could just keep taking from your account.0
