I also got that error, but still got a confirmation email, so I think it is working.

I got the confirmation email too but then when I tried to put in the activation code it said my account was invalid (or something like that). The site is still in Beta mode so I'm sure they'll sort it out, just teething problems.

I have just registered and clicked on the link in the email and it seems to have worked so it looks like it's up and running now

You need to register so press the 'Login' on the top right and then when the pop up appears click 'Not already registered' and this will take you to the registration form
