Northern Rock -fees -can I get them back?

Arranged a mortgage with NR -paid £295 fees - the sale of property has fallen through. Can I get some of the fee back? Or I am out of pocket?

  • If this was an arrangement fee, then I'm afraid you might well be out of pocket, as the fee is non refundable as soon as the reserve the product for you (i.e. as soon as they have started on your application).

The same thing happened to me recently, we applied for a mortgage and our vendors after 3 weeks took the property off the market. We were lucky in that we had not arranged the valuation. I phoned up Nationwide who were going to be our mortgage provider and explained the situation to them. They gave us a grace period (3 months) to find another property without sacrificing the fee. They were very nice and did say that this might be extendable if we hadn't found anything. We have recently found somewhere and they have kept their word.

My advice is to phone up NorthernRock, be nice, explain the situation and they may do the same.

    Good luck
