I'm one of these people who likes to know they are eating food killed in a fair way and that is above all SUSTAINABLE.
I get really confused with what is the best stuff to buy when it comes to fish.
Price is important, but id rather eat less of it and know its ethical.
Line caught? farmed? wild? what i HATE is dredging, big net fishing that catches loads of stuff that isnt needed and gets thrown back dead.
it really is criminal... i really dont like mussels and i know they are the most sustainable seafood! arghh!
anyoone got any input, on MS fish with an ethical slant?

i will be watching this thread with interest.
i love fish and want to eat a lot more of it. all i really know is to stay away from cod, haddock and tuna.
i'm also a bit concerned about the amount of chemicals in farmed fish but my knowledge is limitted.- prior planning prevents poor performance!

I'll be watching this too - I have very strange eating habits which stem from childhood, and am, VERY slowly, breaking myself out of them by trying new things
My problem is completely psychological, but I am literally petrified of some things!
I ate a piece of fish for the first time in about 25 years a couple of years ago, and have now clocked up cod, seabass and something else I can't remember, but can't face anything too "fishy" yet. I have in my head I want to try lobster, but I might have to work myself up to that one, financially as well as mentally :rotfl:0 -

Yes I have seen both of these series, but not got further answers really, it's not just about being told what to eat it's about understanding why and labelling really I suppose.DFW - Debt Free Date July 2013, LBM Oct 2011

Sainsbury's Basic Tuna is Pole Caught, their basic Eggs are Barn (not cage) reared to freedom food standards, banana's are fair trade.... I could go on!
But I am on such a small budget that I like the fact that I can buy cheaper goods which have a slightly more ethical way of getting to the table.
I also buy my meat from a farm shop too!We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy! Mortgage Free Wannabe :dance:Overpayments Made: £5400 - Interest Saved: £11,550 - Months Saved: 240 -
I noticed the other day that Sainsbury's have quite a bit of frozen fish with the marine council logo on it which is fairly reasonably priced, the Marine council is probably the best place to go for information. I can't post links but you should be able to find it via google. they have a good list of fish that you should eat and that you should avoid.I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly

We are lucky to have an excellent local fishmonger and I try to have fish at least once a week but the cost of decent fish to feed four adult appetites is considerable.0

you know what 9 times out of 10 i am still confues by all the labelling. Many use labeling in a very cunning way to make you thing your buying good, but you actually find out your not.
i don't eat alot of fish, tuna i buy from sainsburys as , as far as i'm aware their basic tuna is caught correctly with no damage to dolphins. salmon don't buy alot buy i generally buy from sainsburys for the same reason it is caught how it is meant to.
but apart from that i'm confused.
i did watch jamies olivers prog about getting us to eat less popualr fish. but i really strugglw with shell fish, anything slimy like muscles. so what i do eat of tuna , salmon i do try my best to make sure i'm buying it the correct way. but it is all confusing.
i do love a nice piece of cod from chippy, but i also like pollack, basa. but are these a better fish to eat, are these also in decline ? i just don't know.
we don't have a local fish mongers, tbh i not even sure where their is one the isle of wight. there used to be a couple in my local town, but now only supermarkets have fish counter's.
there maybe something out ventnor perhaps, considering were surrounded by water i not sure much is caught locally in the solent apart from crab, which u can buy from at hut on ventnor sea front.
maybe it is partley my fault for not doing more reasearch into my local area, and i will hold my hands up to that and be honest. perhaps it too easy for me to go to supermarket, maybe i should be more proactive. and do some reasearch.0 -
