in Cutting tax
Can anybody help please ? I have just completed my husbands tax return for 2009/10 and have a whacking unexpected bill for nearly £4000. I thought PAYE was so you didnt have shocks like that !
He has worked for the same company for the past 6 years and has a small pension too. He is a higher rate tax payer. In 2007 he got a company car and things started going wrong from there. I notified the tax office the same week that he got the car so we wouldnt have any nasty shocks. They put it in the tax code, then for some reason they took it out again. They also changed his tax code to BR. There was no notification sent of this.
I realised in October 2009 that my husbands salary was high so queried it, which is when I found out about the car. (I had been ill so had not noticed it before) They put him on a month1 basis from then on and said there would be a tax underpayment which they would put against the next tax year, which they of course didnt.
I can remember reading something during the tax credit debacle, that if a mistake was their fault, and they had had the information for a long time, and you thought your affairs were in order, that they would maybe forget about money owed.
Does anyone know about this or where I can find out about this information ? Needless to say, I have not been able to find it on their website ! (If its there its very well hidden) Thanks

They won't write off any money owed if you're in self assessment.0
