9yr old with missing adult teeth

Options
Hi

I took my 9 yr old to the dentist last night, for his routine check up. The dentist has mentioned that he doesnt think that my 9yr olds adult teeth are there as they havent made an appearance since his baby teeth fell out. These are the teeth that would be next to, his front 2 on the upper jaw. The first 2 are there; but his (cant quite remember the exact name of the teeth) pre-molars and incisors (fangs) just dont seem to be there. I have to take him to hospital tomorrow for an X Ray, and then back to the dentist so he can make an appointment for us to see an orthadontist.

I just wondered if anyone else had every heard of this? I have heard of overcrowding, but not 4 missing teeth, possibly more, when he loses the rest of his baby teeth.

I feel really sick with shock today, last night, I dont think I fully understood so I didnt ask any questions. I can all ready hear the comments other children will call him, like ''bugs bunny'' etc.

As far as I am aware, no-one in my family has had missing teeth or in his fathers, we all had problems with overcrowding.

Thanks for reading this.
I also remember the words of my friends, but I would rather have enemies than friends like you :p

Crikey it's not something I've ever heard of. I hope you don't worry too much and wait to see what the x-ray shows up. Easier said than done I know.

Why don't you ring the dentist back and ask him to explain to you more clearly the bits you didn't understand?
  • I had a similar/same thing when i was 14. I still had my baby teeth (no 2 and 3 from middle on both sides) as my adult teeth did not come through. I had to have an operation (day patient) that basicaly broke the bone at the roof of my mouth and pulled the teeth through a bit. Couple of braced, elastic abnds and a lot of wax later they grew as normal.

Not sure how common it is but mine are fine now.

Though i would give some advice - if it turns out to be this, make sure he wears the retainer after the brace is taken off - mine moved horribly (i guess cos they were forcibly made to grow) I had to pay to get veneers at the age of 22!

    Godd Luck with the appointment.

    Well -

My elder brother has an extra adult tooth where as I have an adult tooth missing!

I had to have my baby tooth pulled out as there was nothing to push it out of the way...

  • :) Thanks everyone

At least I know my son isnt the only one with missing teeth.

I'll wait till I get the X Ray and then ask all my questions to the dentist. Hopefully they are up there and just being lazy at coming thru - which wouldnt surprise me, with him! :rotfl:

    Thanks again.

My 29 year old son still has baby upper canines (both sides) and does not have any adult teeth to come in.

When he was a child we were referred to an orthodondist who said it was an option to remove the baby teeth, (they are still there!!) and have all the other teeth pulled forward. After discussion with a senior colleague, and us, it was decided that it was not a good option and nothing was done.

I appreciate that your son's baby teeth have already fallen out so treatment is necessary, but don't be rushed into removing baby teeth, as they sometimes last for ages. I work with a lady aged 53 who still has lots of baby teeth, and they are hanging on in there!:D

It's more common than you think to have congenitally missing adult teeth. When we first found out I felt terribly guilty (as you do as a mother!;) ) because I felt that somehow it must have been my fault. But that is not the case.

HTH. Good luck to you and your son. Don't despair, there are lots of options out there, and the professionals wil make sure he won't end up looking 'odd' at all.

    Hi, you are not alone.
My eldest son (almost 11) has 6 missing teeth which was a surprise and shock, these teeth are all around the front including his lower front teeth. his two upper front teeth are pointed and will need attention.
My other son they cannot decide despite 3 x rays if he has 1 missing tooth. No admitted family history although my husband has a few funny looking teeth!
They cannot fully decide yet what treatment will be best for my son until he is older-next review Jan. Recently he has lost a few baby teeth and some have been replacedHe still has his baby front teeth at the moment.I have felt extremely guilty, worried and extremely anxious about how things will turn out. He probably will end up with implants. He know that he will need a lot of dental work but we tell him most of his friends will need braces etc, some are just getting them, so this helps him in some way. He also knows that eventually he will have good teeth.
    Good luck.
  • Oh no! DS has just been referred to orthodontist to look at his remaining baby teeth. It never ocurred to me that he may never get his second teeth. Mind you By the time he gets to the top of the waiting list he'll probably be a pensioner!

  • I still have a baby tooth, it was due to be extracted yesterday and my adult tooth was going to be forced into the correct position with a fixed brace. (slight hiccup but I should know next week when I will be having it done now)

These days orthondontists can do amazing things even with a situation such as your sons. If he has indeed got these teeth completly missing I am sure they will find options for him that will give him a normal set of teeth.

Maybe they will suggest a brace when he is older to bring the teeth behind the missing ones further forward. These can also be reshaped to give the appearance of a canine (As I am having done) or bulit up. I will have had 6 extractions and some people have more so I don't think that having too few teeth will be a major problem to sort out.

Good luck, I am sure it will all work out. When the fantstic Toothsmith sees this post he will give you much better advice.

    Hi

I have 2 missing front teeth, my first 2 came through (and I chipped them) but the other 2 square -ish (don't recall correct name :o ) ones never did as 2nd teeth, just the fangs next to them, my fangs were filed down and capped so I have 4 square teeth at the front, all made slightly larger so as the gap is not noticeable.

My mum also has this problem and had dentures.
