Has anyone used this? I can play guitar but am not very good and need to get back into it. (Some people that I probably have no natural talent which could be true).

  • People learn in different ways, so what works for someone else may not help you. Most people find a mix works well - some videos, some tab, some playalongs, some personal lessons.

There are a number of guitar study sites on the web. I can't comment on the one you mention but one which gets a lot of praise is Justin Sandercoe's http://www.justinguitar.com. Justin has an impressive background as a professional musician, but he runs the site on a "voluntary donations" basis, so you can try the lessons and see if they work for you. I would check that out before paying money for something that may not suit you.

Truefire is another long-standing site with some very good teachers (Larry Carlton amongst them) and an emphasis on playalongs. You can download a selection of lessons before subscribing, and subscribe at various levels and for as long as you want, so you can see if it suits before committing heavily.

Don't neglect traditional learning resources. Some of the news-stand magazines are very good (most notably Guitar Techniques, although that is almost entirely transcriptions so a bit above beginner level).

All that said, there is nothing like having a proper lesson with someone who is skilled on the instrument to demonstrate, encourage - and tell you what you are doing wrong, too! Some teachers may be willing to accept you as a pupil without a commitment to regular or frequent lessons, or a friend who plays well may be willing to provide guidance. Good one-to-one tuition can never be cheap but it really makes a huge difference.

    Good luck.
