I really am quite rubbish when it comes to food and for some reason quite paranoid about poisoning myself with chicken!!! :rotfl:
I do quite often post these kinds of questions so bear with me!....
OH bought a chicken from tescos a couple of wks ago and it was frozen on day of purchase. got it out yesterday lunchtime and has been defrosting ever since in the fridge .... have put it in the oven to roast but on reading the back it says to check for ice crystals in the cavities and check legs are flexible...
1)legs were flexible and could be bended
2)there were a couple of v small ice crystals in the inside which I just scraped out - not loads like less than a teaspoons worth ... chicken was pretty cold still but not obviously frozen from what I can see...
cooking @ 190 for 1hr 45 mins but worried Im gonna kill us now....!!:eek:
any opinions?...we have loads of other stuff I could bung in the oven and for what was essentially a £3.33 chicken I dont want to risk food poisoning....

Even if you ate it raw, there's almost no chance that it will kill you

I know I am silly and very paranoid when it comes to cooking chicken (bizzare as have never had food poisoning from it!)
OH will say the same as you guys and laugh at my OCD-ness Im sure! :rotfl:0 -
You are always right to be careful, especially with chicken, and there is nothing silly about that. It sounds fine to me, as a rule of thumb just make sure meat is well cooked and you wont go far wrong.
Did anyone watch the Human Planet on telly last week? They were following some people in the Arctic who caught birds in the summer to keep until the winter when food was scarce. The birds were kept for months in a seal skin sewn up and stored outside. They didnt even cook them before eating (shudder). What a contrast to our society where we worry so much about kitchen hygiene and where so much food is wasted because we have best before dates printed on our packaging.

Best before dates are there to encourage us to buy more not for any form of safety .. they can be ignored at will.
I wasnt able to by some celery once as it was on its 'best before date' .. it looked a darn sight better than the bit I had used the same morning!
I was told the till would not allow the sale, so I said ok give it to me & I will make a donation to charity .. they wouldnt let me....I really needed celery & this was all they had BTW I wouldnt normally cause a scene over celery!:p

I know its not silly really to be cautious- I think I go OTT on it tho! perhaps from years of being vegitarian too when I was younger Im a bit funny when it comes to trusting myself handling meat (even tho havent "technically" been veggie for 10 years its probably only the past 4 or so years Ive got into cooking meat myself or at least meat that wasnt already in something else that got shoved into the oven!)
when you think about life/societies without fridges/freezers/best before dates it seems obvious that there is a common sense element to it all - sight, smell, taste etc..
made me laugh about the celery- really is a bit OTT!0
