I submitted mine on Friday afternoon and have a reference number for the payment, but nothing has moved in my bank account as yet. Should I be worried? I understand that these things take time but I do this every year and feel sure that it normally happens instantaneously and I am a bit closer to the deadline than usual this year. Also it did not seem so straightforward this time as it was all done on an external site which I don't remember being the case before.

Have you actually made the payment, or have you just submitted your return?I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. A bit more detail?
I'm assuming you paid via Debit Card (Billpay -if you have a Ref?). In which case nothing will move from your account until at least Mon - possibly Tue. That's how Debit Cards work.
But your payment will have an effective date prior 31/1 ...... which is all you need?If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

Made the payment on a Santander site that HMRC's directed me to. I seem to remember it all happening on the same site before so was a bit worried this was a new system that would take longer.
But as has now been pointed out it shouldn't matter when it arrives as long as the date submitted is before 31st so looks like I should be ok0 -

Yes, that was what I did. For some reason I thought it happened right away in the past, but I must just be remembering the details wrongly. I don't normally leave it this close to the wire, so probably never made a point of checking on the day before now. Thanks for the reassurance anyway.0 -
That's the BillPay site originally created / run by A&L. It's no different now .... it's just been re-badged to Santander since they took over A&L.
But the timeframe out of your account is the same for any Debit Card transaction (assuming you didn't use a Credit Card .... as I think the 1.25% surcharge would have rated a mention).
The best and most direct way to pay - as you obviously have online access - is via a 'one off' Direct Debit. That's directly administered by HMRC. But it does take 5 days to create the initial Mandate. Thereafter you can simply re-use it each 31st Jan (and 31st July if you make payments on account). If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
