What's going on here??

Hi folks,
First I would like say a big thank you Browntoa, Albertross and all the other guys on the wireless "sticky". I have spent the evening setting up a wireless network and without their posts I would be lost. A Million Thanks guys!!! :T :T

There is one slight thing bothering me though..... maybe this is normal (or not!).

Setup is pc + 1 laptop, netgear 614 router, ntl cable modem.

After connecting to the router to change passwords and enable WPA etc, I tried to go back in to the router to make a note of the settings. All I am getting now from www.routerlogin.com or 192.168.0.1, is either a Google results page or 'this page cannot be displayed'. This is on the main pc, btw. I can access it fine from the laptop. Wassup??

  • rather than make a note of the settings, there is a backup settings button, if you use it, it saves the config to a file on your PC.., very useful if you ever have to reset it, or mess the config up.

192.168.0.1 should work on the PC if you have setup TCPIP and IE properly, could you post the output of a

    start, run, cmd

    ipconfig /all >c:\1.txt
    notepad c:\1.txt

    so we can check?

Any further help appreciated. This is all double dutch to me. Tonight I can't access router from either pc or laptop. I am also trying to get a friend's laptop to connect but my network isn't showing up. Probably due to hiding SSID?

Only other way I think is to reset the router which I don't really want to do.
  • try 192.168.1.1 instead..

if you look through these posts for the "assuming everthing is working" paragraph, it tells you how to get to the screens to manually add the ssid to your friends computer, you will need to copy and paste the 63 character key.

This is the key line in your ipconfig ..

    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

    that is your router address.

most netgears default to 0.1, but some don't, either that, ot it has been changed manually to 1.1.

  • I tried that, but no joy.

I trawled round google to see if I could find a solution and I found a post on some site or other advising this......
D/click the 'zone' at bottom right of screen (which was Internet), go to 'custom level'... Scroll right down to 'User Authentication', change from "automatic logon" to "prompt for user name & password".

I was able to get to the router from pc, haven't tried on lappy yet but that's not important anyway. Seems to be working just now anyway.... almost scared to shut down!

Not sure if this is the right thing to do but it works. Opinions appreciated :p:D

ps once I got into router, I changed it to "show SSID" just to connect pal's lappy. Once I'm finished working with it, I can change it back, hopefully!
  • I'm confused, are you talking about a firewall, or in ie settings?

    if start, run, cmd

ping 192.168.1.1 works and http:\\192.168.1.1 doesn't then check your ie connection settings in tools, internet options, see the links I posted, it's in there somewhere..

"You can ping -t 192.168.0.1, but can't browse in IE. In IE, click tools, internet options, connections, make sure "never dial a connection" is checked, click on lan settings, and make sure everything is unticked."

if neither ping or ie works, then it is probably a software firewall issue.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Not as confused as me albertross!!!!!!!

It's the internet security settings. There's a wee 'world' logo saying Internet beside it at bottom of screen. That's what I clicked on.
  • I don't know what software you are talking about, any clues if you right click on it, what it is?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • It's not any software, when you d/click on the internet zone thing, the Internet Security Properties window comes up. It's a shortcut to Tools/Internet Options - Security tab
  • mine is set to automatic logon in intranet zone.

    have you done the

In IE, click tools, internet options, connections, make sure "never dial a connection" is checked, click on lan settings, and make sure everything is unticked."

    bit?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Mine was set at that too until I changed it.

In the connections tab, the 'never dial a connection' is greyed out but in the LAN settings 'automatically detect settings' is checked. Will I uncheck that?
