Hi.

Hopefully an easy question to answer...

When is the actual deadline for paying monies due from self assessment return.

All the ads say before the 31st Jan, so this would imply the 30th, or can it be paid on the 31st.

Cheers

They should (do?) say 'on or before the 31st'?

    Self Assessment payment deadlines

    31 January

You must pay any amount due by 31 January following the end of the tax year. For example, for the tax year 2009-10 (ending on 5 April 2010) you must pay any tax due by 31 January 2011. The payment deadline is the same whether you file on paper or online.

Above from HMRC official website, hence why Im confused

In your example 'by' includes that day.

The deadline is the 31st. If you follow your example down the HMRC page you'll find the wording regarding the 2nd POA (due 31/7) a little clearer :

For example on 31 July 2011, you'd make your second payment on account for the 2010-11 tax year.

...... but both due dates include the 31st.

may be silly question - if I pay at the post office, does it matter that the money I pay on 31st reaches hmrc after the deadline?
The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.

No. HMRC have complex rules for all payment methods based on the 'effective date of payment'. For payments over the PO counter they give the date payment was made. See the right side column here (Payment at Post Office). But do note you must provide the (pink?) SA payslip with the payment :
