mileage allowance on lease car??

Options
Hi, looked through other threads and unable to see one like mine

Im trying to do my SA, i'm a self employed broadband engineer, but work through a company, they lease the van out to me @ £120 p/w.

I know i can claim my fuel back that i stuck in the tank almost £3500 pa.

But a little birdie told me i can claim mileage allowance???
I drive over 75,000 a year so the total would be huge, i only earn about 25,000 before tax. so my SA would look suspecting claiming all that.

Im pretty sure I cant but its worth asking about.

any help would be gratefully appreciated :j

  • Motoring expenses

You can deduct the cost of using your car for business purposes. There are two ways of working out how much you can deduct:
    • a fixed rate for each mile travelled on business, using our fixed mileage rates (40p for the first 10k miles, then 0.25p thereafter
    • the actual expenses, worked out using detailed records of business and private mileage to apportion your recorded expenditure
    • Dont worry about it looking "Suspect", if you have travelled it, and can prove you have (Dont forget HMRC can see MOT certs and have lots of computer info at their fingertips...) then blinking well claim it
It is not up to HMRC to decide that if something is "Suspect" it is not allowed. If they ask you to prove it, and you can, then go ahead and do it.
  • So 0.40p x 10000 = £4000
    then 0.25p x 65000 = £16250
    total £20250

Only concern I have here, and would ask you if you were my client, is any of that COMMUTE (i.e. are you counting when you drive to your "Permanent place of business"

For example, I live in Wales, if I drive everyday to work at Bristol, then those miles are classed as "Commute" and not allowable

Where on earth are you actually going to do 75k miles may I ask, you have me intrigued now!
  • Also, dont forget to claim the lease charges back.

I am just doing some more maths here now.
If you put £3500 in the tank, how many mpg does your car/ van do then?
You need to work that out and see if the £3500 comes back to 75k miles to see whether it looks reasonable, IMHO
  • It wont let me post a link on here so you need to de-cipher this!

www dot hmrc dot gov dot uk forward slash helpsheets forward slash hs222.pdf HASH page=3
  • i drive all over the North East, Scarborough to Newcastle fixing Broadband in customers premises, one day i can do 8-10 jobs throughout the area, and i can easily cover 1500 miles in a week.

the company i do it for leases me the van for stupid amounts which have been deducted already, we dont have a depot just from my house to the jobs and back home again..
