If you search for "free audio books" you can get a lot of public domain stuff that might be of interest.
"Audible" is a popular site I know a couple of people use.0 -
I was signed up to audible (about £8 a month, one audiobook a month, good value when they can sell at £22) til the belt had to be tightened.
I'm now borrowing audiobooks from the library. If you need help converting a CD to MP3, there may well be help on this site as well as via Google.
Both ways are good!0 -
^^^I do hope you are not suggesting any sort of copyright infringement?0

I honestly would not know how.
Mostly as I compete for PC time with three lads & after a bit the gist of their chat is "here's a brew, go sit somewhere else" & when I look at my iPod, the book is there.
I grumble at the space it's occupying when I've finished & again with the brew & it disappears.
As to the merits of Google, when I hear cheeps of ire I ask "Have you Googled it" & things tend to go quieter. There is a noise-related clause to PC use in the House Rules though...
Motherhood involves a lot more strategy than the Baby Books ever suggested...0 -
Audible.co.uk offers a great range, but the file format it uses is protected (DRM) and may not be compatible with your MP3 player - check the site to see if it is.
An alternative which I have used is emusic.com, which offers a good selection of audio books in MP3 format which will work with all MP3 players. The cost is £7.50 per book, and I believe you get your first book free.0 -
Have you tried your local library? I work for a library authority and we have just started offering e-audio books. Library members log into the site with their library cards and then they download the audio books. We got a pretty good deal from the supplier so I wouldn't surprised if other places are doing it too.0

On the internet got to librivox.org - it has classics read by volunteers you can download as mp3s - tons of stuff all free.
As an adult, why not download stories free from itunes as podcasts. The "Selected Shorts" series is good and "The Moth" true stories can be moving as well as entertaining, but not always suitable for children. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0
