Is home delivery good for the environment?

  • It's not just the reduction in the number of miles driven either. Some customers will do their shop as a "round trip" incorporating other destinations in their journey e.g. shopping on the way home from work - but many will be making a specific journey with a cold car - and a cold engine emits more than a warm one as well as being less efficient.

What's more, after an hours shopping the engine is cold again, so the problem is compounded.

After the first delivery a van is up to temperature and remains so for the rest of the run.
  • good point - I hadn't even thought about the whole cold engine thing!

One thing that occured to me last night about this was how many people that do their shopping online still get in their car and drive to a shop (whether a direct or round trip) and 'top-up' - this must happen quite a lot. Can you really say in this instance that the home delivery service has 'saved' a trip?
