Can my employer make me come in for just two hours just for a meeting.

I can see both sides of the argument, but I suspect many of the unemployed who frequent these pages would gladly give up 2 hours on a weekend given the chance.

Personally, I prefer my name on meeting minutes as an attendee rather than an apology for non-attendance.

What is the point of having a mandatory meeting if attendance is optional?

Because most companies throw around the word "Mandatory" far too often just to try and get people to attend such meetings on short notice when they have fouled up and not given people notice...
  • Barry, could she not explain the situation to the manager and ask if her attendance is strictly necessary? If the answer is that it can't be re-scheduled and yes her attendance is necessary, then rather then worrying about a couple of hours' pay, if I were her, I would be weighing up how important the job is, and basing my decision on that.

Is there any possibility that there are the facilities for her to sit in on the meeting remotely, i.e. a conference call?

That could be a good compromise but it does require decent phones.

If as you say they are calling together all staff from different shifts and can't do more than one meetings as suggested, it does make it sound important and I'd be inclined to go.
  • TBH - the only person that will be able to make the decision is the OP's girlfriend - they should be able to read the signs and negotiate with the management as to whether it is totally crucial or not...but then again if they were capable of that I suppose they would not have their BF on here asking the question.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Great a meeting to discuss "Moving forward", "singing from the same hymn sheet", "touching base" and "bringing up to speed".
