I'm currently studying an MA, which finishes in September.

I'm currently in the final stage of being confirmed for a job that I absolutely love and have wanted to do since my childhood. Plus it is probably the more secure of the two. The job would mean a huge change to my life, as it is one of those jobs that becomes your life. The job is without doubt unique and is a lifestyle choice as well as a job choice. However, the pay is 10k less. Starting in January.

This other job I only saw a couple of days ago and applied for looks like I would enjoy it. It has many of the same character requirements (which are the main things I look for in a job), so I would probably enjoy it; the job itself sounds quite good as well. However, the main differing thing between the two of them is the environment. This job as far as I know jobs, is a much more normal job in every way, and won't be as demanding for me. This second job pays 10k more, which is amazing. This starts in September.

I don't really want to go into details as what they are, as I want my identity to be completely annonymous.

Its hard to know why you posted. Do you need help with something.
Telling us some details of the jobs would hardly compromise your anonymity

Congratulations. You say you want some advice... What about? There don't appear to be any questions in your post...
  • Interview for both. If you're accepted for the January one, sign the contract. If you then get the second one and want to take it (10k is worth going for) just hand in the notice on the first one

Or.. tell the first company, after they say "you're hired" that you have an equal job offer elsewhere and would sign with them for an additional 10k. Depends how much balls you've got :)

Which one do you think you'll be happier to still be doing in five years' time? Ten years' time?

All you can do is to attend both interviews and do your best at both and wait and see what happens, dont put your eggs all in basket
  • Sorry, I was thinking of the jobs whilst I was typing the original post, and as a result, it doesn't really make much sense.

    My question is
'If you could start all over again, would you pick your dream job; or, something you think you would enjoy less, but paid more money?'

    I'll spill the beans.

The first job is a commissioned officer in the regular army, paying £24k a year. It's been my dream job since I was probably 3/4 years old. I doubt I'd be able to haggle for more pay!

The other job is for a newspaper, which is something I have always toyed around with if I wasn't going to pursue the army. The position is a management programme for graduates, and from what I read about their ad it looks like something I would enjoy.

I approached the army advisor the day I turned 17 to join the TA (just under 5 years) and I am enjoying it even more so than when I first signed up, so I expect I'd enjoy being in the regular army 5 years down the line.

    basic or potential earnings??

I dont think anyone can answer here, I think you just have to do the pros and cons of each, anguish over the dec ision for a few days, and feel better once you made it.

High salary for a graduate though!
  • The ad says I have a starting salary of £35,000 a year plus benefits.
