Searching for a dog in the North West

Hi all

Not sure if this is the right board to be posting on.
We have been looking for a tibetan terrier puppy for the past year, during that time the price has rocketed beyond our means.
Typical price appears to be around £650/700 for a puppy, which I consider outragious.
We have'nt considered rescue dogs as we have children, and would prefer to know the dogs history.
We are looking for a puppy to join a family home, not to be breed from/shown.
If anyone knows of a puppy which is reasonably priced, (parents have had the relevant health checks), please feel free to contact me.
Thanks in advance.

There's lots of puppies in rescue too, some are born there ;-)

Please be careful to check out the breeder when you buy your pup though. Puppy farming is still rife in this country, and aside from the ethics of the the trade, you are asking for health and beahvioural problems if you get a puppy farm dog.

Some things to watch out for:
people who have loads of different breeds available
people who offer to deliver, or meet you at a service station, etc
you should be able to meet the mother of the litter
the breeder should be able to give you details of all the health tests that were carried out on the sire and the dam
people who promise to 'post the registration papers on'

Saving a couple of hundred quid on a puppy is a false economy if you end up paying out huge sums in vet or behaviourist fees because it was poorly bred, unhealthy and/or not socialised as a pup. Especially if it dies within days/weeks of sale, as they are rarely vaccinated against things like parvo.

A good breeder will know their puppies, they will know their temprements and they will want the best homes for them. Expect to be asked lots of questions to check you can provide the home they are looking for. They may want to homecheck you (i.e. come to your house and check for things like garden fences, etc). A good breeder will also have a clause in the agreement that says if you ever need to get rid of the dog, you will always return it to the breeder, so that it never ends up in a rescue or pound.

Don't take their questions personally, they are just trying to weed out the dodgy buyers, who will get bored with the pup, and abuse it or sell it on.

There's a bit more info on puppy farms here but if you google it, take care, as some of the sites have truly harrowing images.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
  • I would recommend the epupz site aswell. Thats where we found Casey and they encourage you to report the seller/breeder if you find that they are puppy farmers/mistreated pups etc. I am also a member like girlpower and again, get in touch if you want details! It was £4.99 to join (one off payment) and I thought this wasnt outrageous if they are charging reasonable prices for the pups.

Arnie and Casey are Bull terriers (not to be confused with the Staffie etc) and as new pups with Champion pedigree history they can fetch up to £900. We got Casey for £450 as she was nearly five months old and hadnt had her injections.

Good luck in finding the new addition to your family!

Thanks for the replies. I am already a member of epupz, the dogs at £450 are in Ireland a little too far to travel.
Don't worry I have done alot of research into the breed & have no intention of rushing in & getting a cheaper pup, without relevant health checks.
  • I would be wary of epupz, or any other large website that sells puppies, for exactly the reasons that pboae has listed. Most reputable breeder would have homes already lined up for their pups, rather than selling them online.

Check out the Tibetan Terrier Breed Rescue sites there may be either puppies or older dogs who come from a family background.

    Good luck. :)

There are so many sad stories from families who've taken on puppies from so called 'breeders' it's heartbreaking. Please don't go looking for a 'bargain' - you really do get what you pay for, and the work involved in raising a well balanced, socialised litter to do one of the hardest jobs in the dog world 'being a just a pet dog' means rarely does a breeder make a profit. By spending a little more, you're decreasing your chance of ending up with a pup with physical or mental problems and letting yourselves in for that same heartbreak......
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
