How much tax should I pay this year for a job started in September?

Options
Hi Guys

Been a little bit unsure about my tax situation (I'm no expert) and it would be great if someone out there could check my numbers.

I started a job on 1st September and have a gross monthly income of £1799. I pay the following deductions (excluding tax) which have remained constant every month:

Basic Superannuation: £115.14
National Insurance: £124.36
NI Refund: -£0.88 (not sure what this is about)
Student Loan: £49.00

Giving total pre-tax deductions of £287.62

Now, for the tax (I'm down as code 647L):

September & October: £0
November: £146.40
December and January: £228.80

If it continues for the next two months at the December and January rate I'll have been taxed £1061.60 for this financial year with a net income of £9,518.06.

My understanding is I should be assessed on my gross income for the year ending 31/03/2011, which totals £12,593, giving a net income of £10,613.37 (according to a tax calculator). Subtract my superannuation (not included in calculation 7 x £115.14 = £805.98), which should leave me with a net of £9,807.39.

By my reckoning then I should be entitled to a rebate of around £300.

Any help, either confirmation of this, places where I've gone wrong, or advice generally would be much appreciated.

Thanks

    your tax is correct

I don't really understand your figures but maybe this will help

tax is based on gross salary less superannuation
and is based on the whole years figures in a cumulative way

    so gross salary is 12,593
    total sup = 805
    so taxable pay is 11,787
    less allowance of 6475
i.e. 5,312 at 20% so total tax is 1,062 for the year

NI and SLC are based on your gross monthly salary (unlike tax which is based on your yearly total)

SLC is correct as it based on monthly earning i.e. 1799 - 1250 = 549 at 9% i.e. £49 monthly rounded down to the nearest pound

NI is based on monthly gross salary so
1799 - 476 = 1323 at 9.4% (assuming you are contracted out of the second state pension) so NI = 124 monthly

generally tax calculators don't work very well for 'part' years
  • Ok great, I understand it now.

    Thanks for your thorough help.
