Nationwide Remortgage - Confused!

I've been going through the process of remortgaging to the Nationwide since just before Christmas.
Baiscally I've just found out, after requesting employment references and telling my broker last week that everything else was in place that my flat has been "down valued".
Valuation was done on the 20th of December. Surely they've had it since at least the 1st week of January, way before they requested my employer reference. Why only now say it's been downvalued?
Can anyone explain what's going on??
