student paying toax on income

Options
ok i know i dont have to pay tax on approx first 4500 i earn in a year, but the company i worked for last summer had to tax me and i have to wait til the end of the year to get it back as far as im awar. Is this true? I need help on getting this tax back. How do i go about getting this tax back now?
thanks in advance for any help. When i rang the tax office last year they said that income allowance was based on a weekly allowance and so if you looked like earning more than that amount you'd be taxed.

  • The best thing you could do is write to your tax office as soon as the tax year ends in April.

Detail on your letter exactly what you earnt in this job (I'm presuming this was the only job you've had during this tax year) and what Income tax was deducted off it. Check out the personal allowance you are entitled to for 2004-05 from the Inland Revenue Website and work out what they owe you.

When I did this, it did take them a couple of months but they got back to me with a cheque :)

If you're not sure of the maths I'm happy to have a quick look at the numbers if you pm me.

    Good luck!

The best thing you can do is write to your tax office now. You shouldnt have paid the tax in the first place. You should have been advised to complete a P38 if you are a student working in vacation periods only.

Write now, all you need to do is write to the tax office with your NI number and telling them you will earn less than the personal allowance and they will send you a cheque. Why wait 2 months for your money back?

You can get it back earlier if you're not working now, I got taxed in the summer and claimed it all back in September. All you need to do is fill in a P50 and take it with you P45 from your summer job detailing the tax you paid to your inland revenue local enquiry centre and they'll get a cheque sent off for you.
