self assessment help!

hi

my husband registered as self employed on 1st april 2010 however he didn't start working as a taxi driver until 2 weeks later, we have clarifed with hmrc that he has no figures to put on his sa form but they said any other jobs must be put on there. he worked part time in a pub until jan/feb 2010 but we can't find his p60 or any payslips for the pay details. we have asked the pub for a copy if possible, but what does he do if we can't get this info as time is now running out?

can anyone help!

thanks

He won't have a P60 if he wasn't there at 5th April. But should have a P45? Ask the pub for the detail if you can't find it. They won't issue a copy.

You're going to be in dire trouble when it comes to filing the self employed figures if that's the quality of the record keeping?

This sort of thing is quite common, especially in pubs who are often rubbish at performing their legal duties like issuing P45s in good time. With only days to go, your best option in my view is to estimate the gross pay from the pub, estimate the tax too if you can - he should have some idea what tax code he was on and be able to use an online tax checker to arrive at the tax the pub should have deducted from him. Alternatively post his gross on here and the weeks he worked there and one of us can give you the correct tax if we assume he we on the standard tax code 647L.

In the notes to the tax return, you cover yourself by stating exactly how you have arrived at the gross pay and tax paid in this employment, both of which will no doubt differ a bit from the records HMRC hold. But at least the £100 fine is not going to happen as you'll have filed on time.

  • thanks for your replies.

we have all up to date records for this year. its just this is the first return and when he finished at the pub he didn't know that he was going to be self employed and never kept his wageslips.

I have been on to the pub and they are going to look back and get me the figures i need. So hopefully it should all be ok!

    Thanks again
  • Claire - you realise that you only have 1 more week in which to file the return dont you ?

Keep on to the pub to make sure they get you all the figures you need.

I take it you have everything else in order? You are registered with HMRC to file online and that ?
