Reclaiming Tax After 6 Years

I've paid regularly into PAYE.

Recently, I reviewed the tax paid in the year ending April 2004 and realised I have overpayed tax by a significant sum. During this tax year, I finished work following maternity leave. A P45 was completed by my employer which was issued to the tax office.

Has anyone faced a similar situation. There is no question that too much tax was paid but what is the best route to follow given I am beyond the 6 year deadline for reclaiming?

Any suggestions greatly received.

HMRC are going back and issuing repayments automatically where they are due. But they will only do so on the 6 year rule.

You can ring them ..... but I think they will reasonably say 'you have had plenty of time'.
