I've declared all my income and have now been given a tax bill of £748 which has resulted in a K code for next year. The letter stated "you may remember being informed of this in a previous letter". I'm getting on a bit but I certainly wouldn't forget a bill for that amount so they never sent the letter.

I'm trying to get through to the tax office but had no luck so I'll write in. I had 19 tax codes in the first year of my retirement (have kept them all on file) so I've no faith in HMRC.

yes my accountant friend applied for it at the beginning of feb ive not heard from him or anyone from hmrc apart from the tax coding notice that i dropped off at the accountants, but just wondered how long it normally takes before i step in and not make them think im been too impatient.

Which sounds like an application by letter (hopefully on your headed paper if you haven't formally notified HMRC he's acting for you?). Which is going to be a couple of months from the date of the letter.

called to see the accountant today to ask what was happening. he told me that HMRC wrote to him asking if i was self employed and they were confused that i wasn't, that was the beginning of march, he wrote back saying that i had signed a form saying that he was dealing with my tax affairs, since then he has heard nothing, but he as sent a letter of complaint today,so hopefully it won't be too long now.

thought i would give you an update. sent my last p60 to accountant at the end of April , he still as not heard anything. I'm getting a bit fed up now and wished I'd persevered with phoning HMRC, who should i complain to without making things worse and confusing matters? It was at the end of January when I first applied for my rebate using the accountant, thinking he would be best to sort it, since then nothing seems to have changed.

The accountant is in no better position in regards to speaking to HMRC then you are, there is no "jump the queue" for accountants.
Possibly the HMRC is taking forever, doesn't surprise anyone at all.
Call the accountant whether he heared anything since (just in case) and if not get back on the phone and keep trying. HMRC are very busy, many people are now after getting new tax codes and getting P60s calling them,so you just have to keep trying.

been to accountants to ask if anythings moving on the tax rebate front, he said there was an eight week wait. so it looks like it could be late summer before i get any closure.
