Turned down for a remortgage due to ex-partner ruining my credit!

I have just been turned down by HSBC for a remortgage deal. Completely bewildered by this - I have a good job, good wage, small joint mortgage with my current partner.

I signed up with Equifax and found out that my ex-partner defaulted on our old current account (which he had promised to close when he moved out of our house and all the bills were paid - it defaulted with an unpaid overdraft of about £70! I had been checking that he had closed it using online banking. The current account no longer showed up, so I thought he had closed it - feel really naive now...)

I don't know what to do. My financial life with my new partner is now under threat as we can't get a good remortgage deal on our current property. I am happy to put the mortgage into my new partner's name (with appropriate paperwork drawn up, of course). My credit rating is otherwise good, bordering on excellent, which makes the situation even more frustrating.:(

I don't know if there are any further implications with doing this. Will I have to change the deeds? Will mortgage lenders even let us swap from joint to sole? Will this make my credit look even worse, going from being a homeowner to, well, not?

I am so angry that a spiteful action from my past is putting strain on my otherwise happy relationship! Sorry. Rant over. Any advice gratefully received!

You have a mortgage so it's not that bad

What is the current mortgage rate?
What deals does your cuurent lender have?

You say it is a small mortgage so rate won't matter that much.

Make sure all financial links with the ex are terminated
  • Current deal is coming to an end and the bank's standard rate is not very good, compared to what I could get if I shopped around.

They don't have any particularly good deals either - I am so angry that I am now significantly limited in my mortgage choices because of my nasty, spiteful ex!

My equifax report still has them down as a 'financial associate' - not sure if this still impacts on my credit rating?
