The centre of Newcastle isn't great for cheap hotels - and those which exist tend to be taken over either by stag parties or visiting football supporters (depending on whether Newcastle are playing at home) at weekends so the Travelodge, Premier Inn etc tend to fill up well in advance.

The Royal Station Hotel and the Thistle are both next to the railway station and are often available at decent rates. Both are quite dated and in need of modernisation but offer a great location - near the shops, bars and St James Park. Just do go expecting a quiet night's sleep.

If you are happy stopping further away from the city centre there are loads of B&B type places in Jesmond - which is only a few stops from the centre on the metro.

Travelodge/premier Inn are on the quayside, buses run from there into town, St James Park is a 5/10 minute walk from there.

Travelodge are notoriosly expensive for Saturday nights though.

generic number for Newcastle is 0191 2615432 (instead of the costly o870 number)

Stayed a few times and its fine.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

That's a good price for the Jurys. It's one of the best hotels in the city centre but I doubt that you'd get that rate on a match day as it's just around the corner from the "Sports Direct.com" stadium.

As also mentioned you can get good rates at the Metro Centre hotels as long as you don't mind sleeping in a retail park.

Late Rooms is good for Newcastle hotels: http://www.laterooms.com/en/k16298218_newcastle-hotels.aspx
  • Travelodge on coast road is usually around £19 a night if you book in advance. Its in the wallsend/north shields area.

    As Doshwaster says^

It all depends why you are wanting to stay there, but being one of the (if not the) party hotspot in the UK, it will have its drawbacks in respect of hotel accommodation - particularly on weekends.

Jesmond is a good suggestion and maybe even consider an airport hotel which although a little way out of the city, is easily accessible by the metro.
