could anybody offer advice on the subject on whether or not construction sites are classed as temporary or permanent work places for claiming business mileage on a tax return. in my case i am an employee, use own car, get assigned to a site or sites usually for 2 to 3 weeks that can roll on for up to 4-5 months. the company i work for has a head office but i generally work from home when not on a site.

I'm sorry but it just isn't that easy. This link is to a Contents page of the HMRC manual which may give some indication of the difficulty here.

If you want something to study that may be a good starting point. If you want guidance there will be lots of questions starting with your description of where your home is compared to the area you work in.
We can get there on this forum but it will probably take some time.0
