on my credit report for 13 years
Options
I would appreciate any advice here as im getting nowhere fast.
I have just recieved a letter from a debt collection agency regarding a barclaycard loan that my wife and i took out in 1997. We divorced and she took over the payments. We've now lost touch. After 13 years i recieve this letter for payment of £3000 (original debt was for £8000). I phoned barclaycard first. They had no record of me as im not a customer any more. They passed me to 6 depts one after the other said 'Theres nothing we can tell you as we have no record of you or your loan.'
The second part of this is that i now realise that this has been on my credit report for all these years. Experian told me that six years is the limit and the only people that can remove it is barclaycard. But they cant help me. I have phoned the debt agency to tell them that if any money is owing, of course i will pay but i want to know whats owing and why ive been contacted only after 13 years. Who can i speak to in resolving this. I just want to discuss with the original lender before handing money to a company out of the blue.

It sounds like barclaycard have sold your debt on and wrote it off as its passed the statute barred limit. In this case you should liase directly with the DCA and ask them to provide a breakdown of debt etc before you pay it.0

Err... no.
If it's statute barred then there is no legal liability for OP and no reason to pay. If he's not heard about it or paid toward it in 6+ years it is statute barred and NO MONIES ARE DUE.
OP - read this:

If it is a joint loan then Barclays should be able to tell you when the last payments were made.
If over 6 years it will be statute barred.0
