Is it possible to take out a mortgage on a house you don't own?

Hi,
Just a general query really as I am not sure if this is possible or not. Is it possible to take out a mortgage (or loan) secured on a house you don't own if the owner of the house is willing to sign their permission.
I am not saying this is a good idea or not, it was just something someone mentioned to me earlier today and I thought it sounded a bit odd.

A mortgage is actually the charge placed on a property to secure a loan advance. A loan is what you are actually looking for.0
