42" Television?

Wondered if any bargain hunters know of any deals on televisions at the moment the best I could find was £349 in argos plus £8.95 delivery which I think is probably the best i'll find, just thought i'd see if anybody knows of any good TVs for sale elsewhere?

Which one's that Katie? The cheapest 42'' telly I can see on the Argos website is £400 and it's a Bush and it's only HD ready.

On the other hand Amazon have a 42'' LG which is full HD for £395 including delivery.

The cheapest 42'' telly at Richer Sounds is a HD ready Panasonic Viera which costs £400 but you'd have to pick it up instore.

Offers on large screen tvs come and go so, if you're prepared to wait for the right bargain, keep an eye on this listing on Hot Uk Deals.

The LG TV above from Amazon is £359 at the moment.

In my opinion, I think you should stick to brands like the above, or if you can afford the slight extra, go for Sony or Panasonic.

Many people on here don't agree that the big brands offer any more, but I know from experience in selling TV's in my student days that the really cheapo makes tend to get returned.

That's just my preference. It might be me falling for the hype. If this is your opinion, get a Technika :D

I'd 2nd that. Cheap is definately noticable when compared to good quality.

I bought my 37" at Richer Sounds recently, an HD ready 1080i Plasma Panasonic. Excellent picture quality compared to most, and at the price bracket (£300 with a VIP members discount) even made the cheap ones expensive!

Check avforums.com for some good advice and deals...

I got a 40 Inch Sony 18 months ago, and I ended up at Martin Dawes online, who don't appear to sell stuff any more.
But it shows how useful the price comparison sites are - I never would have found that without (it's a thing of beauty too :D)

On quality, I initially bought my son a cheap 22 Inch TV for his birthday. I found the perceived quality awful, but more than that, it didn't do it's job very well! The sound was terrible, so I took it back.
I paid a few more quid (probably £20 when all said and done) and bought a Panasonic, which does everything well, just a fuss free telly.
  • LG 42" HD ready plasma is down from £599 to £349 online at Currys

Buying a TV just on the size and price is a bit shortsighted though? It's like wanting a blue car with 5 gears. There are plenty out there ranging from £50 to £50,000, but some are obviously better and will last longer. It also depends on what the OP wants to use it for. If they have SkyHD or a blueray player, then an 1080i rather than 1080p, although both would look similar from a distance. In a light room Plasma would be better with it's blacks than an LCD, but you could also spend some bucks on the LED version which is better still! With gaming/sports the better the refresh rate becomes important, 60hz - 200hz?

I'm no expert in the technology, but I've seen a lot of TV sets and read up a bit about them.
I think this is probably why it's better to stick to the main brands, because invariably, you'll be nearer to the leading edge of the technology.
I can get bogged down in the stats on this, 50hz? 100hz? 200hz?
I've noticed some shops advertise TV's as 600Hz - but apparently this is a completely different thing than the refresh rate.
Also 200hz TV's seem to have another £200 put on them, so is it worth it?
I think for 95% of people, they don't really need to bother with all this, which is why I tend to glibbly say "Stick to the brands" It's a bit(a lot) simplistic - but you'll probably get a decent telly.

To be honest, with a HD receiver, on a decent Sony 100Hz, I'm wowed by the picture on only a few programmes, whether that's the way the programs are broadcast, recorded, recieved, whatever, it's the case.
On the XBOX with an HDMI cable, it looks amazing.

However, you get a large screen LCD, go closer than 7 foot away, and watch a Standard Def program on a rubbish channel, and the picture is awful!

As a disclaimer here, because I know someone will venomently and violently disagree with me, these are comments from my own experience.
I say this from my own experience, posting here :D
  • I've found Amazon and Richer Sounds have the best combo of price and quality of CS, oh and take a look at HotUKDeals as well, the only question I would ask is do you need a 42" TV, this helped me as I too wanted a 42" (in the huge shop) but when I got home kept trying to bury my head in the wall behind me as it felt too close and in the end changed it for a 32" these guys cover it quite well....

    Good Luck!
Tips are good, tips are good, you know that tips are good!
  • To echo the earlier comments, big difference in quality based on the price you pay. I have an LG 42" which I got about 18 months ago (cheapest I could find). The picture is ok. However, I got a 46" Samsung 3d TV in November - it was about £1k, but the quality for the regular channels is AMAZING. Big, big difference.

Best prices if you are looking for a deal tend to be:
    Richer Sounds
    Direct TVs
    Best Buy
    Amazon / Play
