Eeeek!!

Hi everyone. Hope I am posting in the right place.

Me and my OH have wracked up £2,000 in debt :( It makes me feel sick as we both live with his parents who charge us nothing. We pay for nothing at all!

He earns £1,100 a month and I'm a student with only student loans. We planned to move out this year but now I am wondering how we can afford it. I have £1000 saved but really want to keep this for a deposit instead of paying off our debt. We owe £1,000 on a Halifax overdraft and he has a £1000 graduates overdraft which isn't fully maxed out. We also have £300 on a Barclaycard.

Can you get a part time job while you're studying??
If you dont pay for any bills etc maybe it'd be worth keeping a spending diary to see where all your money is going.

Its a relatively small debt though in the grand scheme of things and I'm sure with a bit of effort you'll have it fixed in no time. xxxx

I try every single day. It's so soul destroying, I'm in London and all the jobs are for skilled workers or those who can work every single day of the week. I worked for four years in a supermarket and was rejected by m&s food!! I apply for any job going I'm not even snobby about it which is the most painful thing. I'd love a job as I'm going out of my mind with five out of the seven days I'm at home!!

If you're in London, have you thought about mystery shopping?

  • I would be looking at the interest rates to be honest and probably clear down the Barclaycard at least from your savings, once you have done that then close the card account to prevent further temptation.

You can then see what funds you can pool to clear bigger chunks from the remaining two debts, priorty may go to the one with the largest interest, usually.

When I was studying in London I got a part time job as a salesperson for a one-man web design company. It fit in really well with my studies as obviously he could be flexible so long as I got him meetings and made sales. Have you looked on gumtree? Are there campus bars, shops or cafes that might be flexible as well?
