Carpet smells.....Help

Options
Hi,

A large glass of water was spilled on an oldish carpet and not mopped up .
The water has sunk into the carpet and its giving off a really bad smell despite the fact that I have washed it in detergent with a tiny splash of bleach .

I would really appreciate any ideas on how I can get rid of the smell .

Thank you

You could try tipping a good layer of bicarbonate of soda over the area and leaving it to dry - then hoover up.

    Hi Swampmonster ,

I agree it really does smell horrid .

I read that diluted lemon juice works so this afternoon I applied it as instructed , stepped back to admire my handwork , only to knock the jug over ... The carpet is now wet in 2 places , the lemon juice didn't work , and I am thinking about moving out because of the smell

Some type of odour control carpet shampoo that you buy in pet shops for puppy accidents might help.

let the carpet dry out then sprinkle on bicarbonate of soda quite thickly - leave overnight and vacuum up. You may have to do this a couple of times, but it WILL work! it even worked in my OHs new car when a baby bottle of milk leaked all over the back seat and carpet! and had a whole day to set the smell in (in the summer - the smell when he opened the car was absolutely disgusting!!!!)
  • once DRY the smell will go...

perhaps its time to bite the bullet and hire a 'rug doctor' carper cleaner. brilliant machines. and not THAT expensive to hire. i get mine from morrisons. cheapest place i've found.

Why don't you pop over to the Flylady thread - it's just the place to find answers to these sorts of questions :D:D:D

Alternatively, I'll add this to the existing carpet cleaning thread later.
