This is a very reasonable question, all the more as some people assume that SAs apply only to people who are self employed.
Working for yourself is only one of the reasons; others are being a company director; membership of Lloyds; being a minister of religion; having income from property letting; receiving other untaxed income ...
many pensioners are asked to self assess as the rules for the personal allowance are different for them and depand on their income or savings.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

Anyone who has been issued a return or notice to submit and anyone who has potentially taxable untaxed income. The only thing that is constant is change.0

Fairly comprehensive list here :

All I would add is that people should contact their tax office to double check.
For example, HMRC have advised two of my clients that despite being company directors they do not need to file SATR's (due to low income & no dividends). This advice seems at odds with what it says on their website.0 -
There are quite a lot of self assessment questions around here at the moment with them being due end of Jan.
I noticed that there are a few questions around claiming part of mortgage and mileage and laptops etc. Would this only be if you are self employed and a sole trade?
I ask as we complete my partners self assessment. He is director of the company he runs (one man) and it pays him a wage so we just complete the tax return for his wages. Anything else like milage and laptops comes out the company as expenses. Is this still correct.0
