Career change to Electrican for 32 Year Old

My DH is sick of working in an office and wants to become an Electrician. I would like any suggestions from people as to how this is possible..
I would like him to go to University and become an electrical engineer, but this will take 3 years as a student, hes not that keen.

How do you go about getting an apprenticship??
Is it best to study on top of working his normal 9-5 offfice job??

Obviously we are concious of £££, or lack there of, but not sure how much a trainee electrician gets.

any advice/stories woud be gratefully appreciate

I don't think that electrical engineer and electricians are one and the same. While an electrical engineer is more acedemic it would not be neccessary for him to go to university in order to become an electrician.
  • to become a electrician he would need a minimum of city and guilds 2360 part 1 and part 2, total of 3 years at college either 1 full day a week or 3 nights a week, after completeion and passing of these he would need 16th edition which is 10 weeks and then 5 years experiance working in a electrical envirement has a electricans mate, also usfull other qualifications are C & G 2391 fix fire testing certificate and also C&G p.a.t testing portable appliance testing certificate, took me about 6 years for me to get all these, hope this helps.

He is really inteligent so I thouht the engineer way might be a more useful use of his brain, designing things as well as the means to implement them

Really hard getting a placement as an older person. Basically because employers can pay the young trainees much less. My partner tried for 4 years and ended up doing ONC and HNC (2 years each) at college without a placement. Good luck with it.

For design type jobs he'd be much better off with a degree if you can talk him into it.
One day I might be more organised...........

Be careful doing an Engineering degree, thinking you will get a job at end of it.

Much industry has disappeared with globalised economy & there is prejudice against older job applicants (whatever the new law says).

I am qualified up to my eyeballs in engineering, with hitech experience & cannot get a job. There aren't that many jobs and employers can always pick younger people on lower wages.

Did you learn how to build a time machine during these "6" years? ;)

My hubby is a sparks and has been since 20 when he joined a very large well known company. and although now at 25 he is fully trained and on great wages. but his company have taken on adult trainies and although the pay isn't great to start off with , they provide everything and help with everything along the way and each year and exam pay does increase. i know their is a shortage of sparks in the area we live and just can't seem to find anyone interested.
