in Cutting tax
I received a letter from my old employer today i finished working with at start of Jan them but are still owed a wage due at the end of this month they said they had a software system error which had resulted in me not paying enough tax from April - Sept last year and as this my last wage with them they are taking the amount in full which is £300 can they do this as it not them i owe the money to but the tax office(i think i correct with that).
I need to try to rectify this problem asap before they take the payment at end of the month so any advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks.

The instruction to them is here :-

.......... it's virtually certain HMRC would OK them to do it. But they should have contacted HMRC to check. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Now if you could give us the year to date figures of her December payslip for taxable pay tax paid to date and tax code number.......The only thing that is constant is change.0

It is worth calling your local tax office. One of my client staff personnel had 4 different employers in the tax year, there was a mix-up over codings and I under-taxed her £300. I picked this up in December when I ran Quality control checks on the payroll (rather than just accepting what the software was saying). She approached her local tax office, who to my amazement have instructed me to keep the coding as it was in December and in effect not reflect all the income she's had this tax year. The £300 will now be taken out of her pay from April 2011 to March 2012.
So it's worth a shot!Hideous Muddles from Right Charlies0
