cleaning sofa without spending?

My apologies if this is covered somewhere else. I have 14 month old twins and am job hunting and I don't have time to trawl through, I am trying but gave it 10 minutes and am desperate!
I have 2 babies, 2 cats and an eggshell blue sofa :S. I try but it gets pretty grubby! I used to hire a RugDoctor every couple of months but that's gone out of the window with my new budget. The covers are dry-clean only.
I will get hold of a throw to put over it once it's clean, but anyone know how to clean a sofa without splashing the cash? I have carpet shampoo but am reluctant to try it.
I'd also be incredibly grateful if anyone can tell me how to unblock a clogged shower without buying drain unblocker.
Thanks so much for any help.

re the shower, pull the drain seive out and use a bent metal coat hanger in there and you will bring up loads of hair
re the sofa, use a sponge to make foam from something like stardrops and water and rub with the foam, then wipe with a clean cloth0 -
Forget the dry clean tickets,
My sofa and my heavy curtains all said dry clean only and they go in the washing machine every few months.
No problems what soever.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
if its not just hair that's clogging up the shower, I usually chuck down a good dose of bicarb, drizzle of vinegar and then pour a kettle of boiling water down it, sorts it out most of the time :-)0

Ditto the washer for the sofa cover, I used to do the same. Cool wash and liquid detergent, smells nice too.0

First, I have twins too so am fairly qualified to give advice
1. Enjoy the twins and ignore the mess... They will grow up fast and nobody will remember your sofas!!
2. Ignore the dirty sofas and chuck a throw over themnow, clean them in a year when the twins 'will' be less messy
By the time they are 4 (which might seem a long way off but believe me it will fly by) you can clean the sofas and they will stay clean much longer as drinks will most likely be banned from the living room!
3. Soak the shower head in vinegar and then scrub with a nail brush or similar
Above all else... Don't worry about the mess whilst the twins are young... Only a twin mum will understand and anyone else is welcomed to come and clean your house and sofas if they don't quite 'get it'
Putting these winter preps here so I don't forget!
Curtain pole installed in the living room
Paint curtain pole
Window quilts for landing window & french door
Add shrink film to the kitchen door & insulate
Insulate front door
Bubble wrap windows & french door
Wash front door curtain
Blind for the bathroom
Find wrist warmers & the wool socks!
Wash heated throws
Wash duvet & wool blankets
Buy vest tops to go under clothes and PJs
Buy nets for bathroom and kitchen
Buy or make blind for kitchen0 -
Thanks so, so much for all the help, guys! Those tips are great...I am going to brave the washing machine, will do the cover for one of the cushions first to check.
Frugal, that's a relief! I seem to spend more time than all my friends cleaning...but my house looks a lot worse than theirs. I don't like it when they come round! I was starting to think I was just a massive slob!
Thanks again xxx0 -
Hi, have a friend who uses baby wipes to clean the sofa, have tryed it and it did get off the dirt but needs a lot of baby wipes. You could get off the worst of the dirt with the wipes and then wash afterwards.0

Well I don't answer my door unless I know who it will be in case they want to come in!!! I've even been known to open my door wearing a coat so I can say "oh sorry, I am just on my way out!"
I need at least 2 days to prepare for a 'visitor' :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Its a twin thing
My house was never this bad when it was just me and DS! Putting these winter preps here so I don't forget!
